The Books That Are Presently Available

The Books That Are Presently Available

I’m looking for a few titles to add into this collection of books. I’ve been leaning towards political, and highly recommended the Devil’s Dictionary. Oddly accurate, and timely even so many years after it’s original publishing.

Please, if they don’t work ignore the ‘buy now’ links, instead click on the title of the book.

The Devil's Dictionary

The Devil’s Dictionary (book)

Print: $16.95

Although the origins of the Devil’s Dictionary are normally placed in 1881 (the point at which Bierce himself said it began) the idea started in August 1869 when Bierce, short of topics to write about and having recently bought a new copy of Webster’s Unabridged dictionary, suggested the possibility of writing a “Comic Dictionary”. He quoted the entry from Webster’s for Viceregent and italicised the section, Kings are sometimes called God’s viceregents. It is to be wished they would always deserve the appellation He then suggested how Noah Webster might have used his talent in a comic form and it was here that the idea of a Comic Dictionary was born. The idea manifested itself in 1875 when Bierce, who had resigned as the Town Crier and had spent three years in London, returned to San Francisco in the hope of regaining his earlier journalistic post in the News Letter.

An Englishwoman's Love-Letters

An Englishwoman’s Love-Letters (book)

Print: $14.68

Download: $10.00

It need hardly be said that the woman by whom these letter were written had no thought that they would be read by anyone but the person to whom they were addressed. But a request, conveyed under circumstances which the writer herself would have regarded as all-commanding, urges that they should now be given to the world; and, so far as is possible with a due regard to the claims of privacy, what is here printed presents the letters as they were first written in their complete form and sequence. Very little has been omitted which in any way bears upon the devotion of which they are a record. A few names of persons and localities have been changed; and several short notes (not above twenty in all), together with some passages bearing too intimately upon events which might be recognized, have been left out without indication of their omission.

Baby Chatterbox, Anonymous Reprinted in as close to original form as possible. THE FIRST VALENTINE.
Rat-tat at the door! Rat-tat at the door!
Here are valentines one, two, three;
There is one for Harry, and one for Will,

And a big one for girlie, see!
Wildly she flies o’er the nursery floor,

Never was girlie so happy before,
As she shouts in her baby glee–
“Oh! I’ve got a valentine, all come, look!
As big as the sheet of a picture book!
Now, don’t you wish you all, like me,
Had a great big heart painted red, you see?”

Barack Obama made history this last election. These quotes are a collection of things he’s said, sometimes funny, sometimes inspirational. The opening is his speech, as we welcomed him as the President of the United States of America. Change will not come if we wait for some other person or some other time. We are the ones we’ve been waiting for. We are the change that we seek. Barack Obama
