This Is Why I Love Satire
The story in question? Well it was a bit about Facebook Shutting Down called FACEBOOK WILL END ON MARCH 15th!
They poked some fun at those who are a bit to into the website and those that are convinced the world is ending (apparently the date was switched about a bit).
“I personally don’t think it’s a big deal,” he said in a private phone interview. “And to be honest, I think it’s for the better. Without Facebook, people will have to go outside and make real friends. That’s always a good thing.”
Now, it gets a bit better by now becoming a viral rumor.
HuffPo posted up a (serious) report on the rumor, pointing to Google Trends, Twitter, and the like to show the extent of the internet panic (and the fantastic snark that goes along with said panic. I feel so investigative now*.
When a satire article instigates a worry or fear I have to admit, the results can be a bit funny. There is also a bit of wonderful coincidence due to reading this article (Cracked.com, 5 Satirists Attacked by People Who Totally Missed the Point) yesterday.
So really, satire is fantastic.
*It was the HuffPost that made me decide to post this up.
